At GFR, this is what we shoot for and why our colors are Purple & Gold;
To treat every competitor as royalty. At least we try to. We’re not perfect, especially me of all people.
Everyone deeply invested in this industry knows it’s…different. I don’t believe there’s a sentence that can describe the difference to those who know nothing of it.
The contrast that exists between a “traditional” lifestyle and a barrel racing one, or a horse lifestyle abroad for that matter, is something we as a producer know well. We’ve seen and experienced both sides.
If I can be frank, I remember going to the Jurassic Classic (More familiar to those living in TX) in Glen Rose for our first time thinking, “this is it?”. As a 12-year old kid brought up by a more conventional way of living, I remember thinking barrel racing was lame.
Fast forward 12 years, I’ve come to learn just how crazy my family actually is. It takes certain people to completely leave a “conventional” lifestyle for one I describe as thankless.
I don’t barrel race. If I’m being honest, I was dragged into it because I didn’t have a choice. At the end of the day, it’s not in me, the training, the upkeep, nothing. I get more annoyed when asked to feed than I do when home alone and out of toilet paper.
I believe every established barrel racer would make a great CEO. Their constantly solving problems, thinking on their feet, putting out fires, and doing the things very few are willing/capable of doing. On top of that, what they deal with isn’t human.
Barrel racers treat their horse(s) better than they treat themselves. The amount of time, recourses, sanity, anxiety, physical energy, planning, and suspense demanded of barrel racing, is astronomical.
They know humility, sacrifice, persistence, patience, perseverance, adversity, and audacity. After 18 years of watching, this I do know.
When the idea of producing barrel races independently came across my family’s table, it felt good, really good. For me personally, it meant I could build something to speak for all those demands I never wanted to begin with and then some.
Furthermore, I knew my family could take something from good to great that finally spoke for everything barrel racers carry. Somewhere along the way, the barrel racing community, you, took this vision to a new level. You took something great and turned it into a juggernaut.
This is exactly what we’re going to be in 2019. Continuing to treat our riders, as royalty, is how we’re going to do it, and we’re going to do it the best. We’re going to produce one-barrel race at a time, free from politics, drama, BS, pettiness or excuses. Every single race will be legit, transparent, and competitive barrel racing, back to back, to back, to back, to back, to back, and then some.
Very few, if no one at all, are willing to do what we do. I want to officially state that, along with staking our flag in the ground for 2019. We’re about added money, F1 dirt and royalty service & experiences. We’re a purple juggernaut. People just don’t know it yet.
